American Newscaster Judy Woodruff FAC Keynote Speaker

Few journalists have shaped public understanding of government and policy as profoundly as Judy Woodruff. With a career spanning decades, her work reflects a deep commitment to thoughtful reporting, civil discourse and public service.
Woodruff is the keynote speaker for this year’s Consortium of State School Boards Associations’ Federal Advocacy Conference taking place September 21-23 at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C.

Woodruff’s national presence began at NBC News, where she served as White House correspondent from 1977 to 1982 before moving into a chief Washington correspondent role. Her early work covering state and local government in Atlanta laid the foundation for a career grounded in accuracy and accountability.

She later became a familiar and trusted voice at PBS, serving as chief Washington correspondent for the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and anchoring the acclaimed documentary series Frontline. After more than a decade at CNN, where she anchored Inside Politics, Woodruff returned to PBS in 2007. In 2013, she and the late Gwen Ifill made history as the first two women to co-anchor a national news broadcast. Following Ifill’s passing, Woodruff continued as sole anchor, guiding viewers through some of the nation’s most significant moments.

This year, in celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday, she has started a new chapter of America at a Crossroads. Through this series on PBS, Judy is exploring what it means to be an American, how that idea has evolved since the nation’s founding and where the country might be going.

Beyond the anchor desk, Woodruff has led meaningful reporting projects that elevate public voices. Her Generation Next initiative explored the perspectives of young Americans, while her documentary work has brought depth and context to complex national issues.

Her influence extends well beyond journalism. Woodruff is a founding co-chair of the International Women’s Media Foundation and has served on numerous boards dedicated to advancing education, public policy and civic engagement.
Her contributions have earned widespread recognition, including an Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award and more than 25 honorary degrees.

For leaders in education and public service, Woodruff’s career offers a powerful example of integrity, curiosity and dedication to informing communities. Her work reminds us that strong institutions depend on clear communication, thoughtful dialogue and a steadfast commitment to the public good.
